Rebecca graduated from Stonehill College in 2005 with a Bachelors of Arts in Studio Art and English. Although Rebecca spent much of her college experience creating nature-based artwork in her studio, she also spent several semesters studying biological sciences; her passion for creativity, the environment and biology eventually led to a deep interest in natural and holistic medicine. After graduation, Rebecca pursued this interest and spent one year studying Chinese and holistic medicine at the National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon.
At NCNM, Rebecca apprenticed in the herbal medicinary and soon became enthralled with the world of herbs and plants. She eventually left Portland to strengthen her knowledge of plant cultivation and deepen her connection to her natural environment; she worked for one season as a farm and garden apprentice at Hay House Organic Farm in Old Saybrook, CT followed by several years as a professional gardener in Boston, MA. Rebecca ultimately started her own fine gardening business, Rebecca Vella Design, in 2009.
Rebecca is passionate about deepening the connection between people and their natural environments- both through gardening and natural medicine. She educates many of her gardening clients through one-on-one garden instruction, teaching vegetable and herb cultivation, composting, and horticultural skills. She has taken coursework through the Horticultural Therapy Insititue and is also a licensed massage therapist practicing in Harvard Square.

Environmental Stewardship: Beautiful gardens and landscapes should not come at the cost of our environment. Because we respect our earth, our clients and ourselves, we do not use chemicals on our gardens. Instead, we use our knowledge of plants, a strong understanding of proper planting techniques and conditions and quality plant material to create gardens that are healthy from the start. When problems and pests arise, we do our best to alleviate them using natural remedies.
We support local! For us, supporting local business is worth the few extra dollars. We buy our plants and landscape supplies from local and family run businesses as much as possible!
We love working with our clients! Do you have an interest in gardening? Do you want to be able to prune your own roses or grow your own basil? Fostering the connection between people and their environment is important for Rebecca Vella Design; Rebecca is available to work beside you and teach you the basics of horticulture and vegetable cultivation.
